Have you recently had surgery for Endometriosis? – Here are some things you can do to aid in your recovery.

There are many things that you can do, immediately following Endometriosis surgery, to jump start recovery. From proper clothing, to exercise and self-care, small simple things can make a big difference.

COMFORT:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You will have residual, abdominal bloating from surgery, so have your favorite pair of oversized sweats available and wear loose layers to be comfortable.

  • Wear “period-underwear” or organic cotton pads for post-surgery spotting. Some spotting is to be expected. Nothing should be inserted vaginally for at least six weeks or until the doctor clears you.

  • Use a wedge pillow such as a Husband to help prop yourself up in bed. This will allow you to change positions without straining your muscles.

OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATION:

  • During surgery, your belly is filled with air in order to increase visibility. This will leave you with residual bloating that may cause pain in your upper back and shoulders. Take Gas-x to help relieve these symptoms. If you find this medication makes you constipated, discuss with your doctor.

MOVING AND MASSAGE:

  • When transitioning out of bed, use a technique called the Log Roll. Start on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat. Slowly bring your knees and arms to your side and roll on to your side. From there, use your upper body to push yourself up to standing. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYQo970ilDY)

  • Massage scars gently to decrease hypersensitivity. Gently touch the scars on top of the bandages at first, then directly on your skin once the bandages come off. As the scars heal, increase the pressure. You can also make castor oil packs. Castor oil has amazing properties that prevent formation of adhesions and improve the appearance of scars.

EXERCISE AND THERAPY

  • Do gentle yoga leg stretches-. E.g.: Happy Baby, hamstring stretch, and the exercises shown below. Avoid abdominal stretches such as Cat/Cow and Cobra pose for now.

  • Short walks during the day are recommended to help improve circulation throughout the body. Don’t push yourself. Less is more here.

  • Pelvic floor PT in six to eight weeks, or when your doctor clears you, will facilitate the benefits of the surgery. It will also address residual muscular aches and pains, help with strength and preventing the formation of scar tissue/adhesions.

SELF CARE

  • “Self-care” is important pre- and post- surgery. Studies show that going into surgery with low stress levels, and positive thoughts around the surgical outcome, can significantly improve post-op recovery.  Examples of self-care things we love are:

    • candles/essential oils

    • face mist for hydration

    • hand creams

    • CBD balm on hands and shoulders
