Pelvic Floor Therapy Can Help Alleviate Chronic Disease Symptoms
Did you know pelvic floor therapy can help you manage your Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), Lyme Disease and Thyroid Disorder symptoms? Pelvic floor dysfunction in chronic conditions is systemic - not just mechanical. At Solstice Physiotherapy, we
understand the complex relationship between chronic illness and pelvic health,
offer trauma-informed, nervous-system-regulating care,
build individualized plans that prioritize pacing, safety, and autonomy,
collaborate with your broader medical team.
How Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Can Help
At Solstice Physiotherapy, we take an individualized, trauma-informed, and system-aware approach to pelvic health. Your therapy plan will be customized based on your medical history, current symptoms, and how your body responds to treatment.
You can expect:
1. A comprehensive evaluation
Your first visit will include a full-body assessment. We may look at your
● posture and alignment,
● breathing mechanics,
● joint hypermobility and core control,
● scar tissue, organ mobility or fascial tension,
● pelvic floor muscle tone, strength and coordination (with consent).
We take time to discuss your medical history, symptoms and daily routines. We acknowledge the emotional impact of living with a chronic illness and honor the full range of your experience with care and compassion.
2. Breathwork & nervous system regulation
Many chronic conditions are linked to dysautonomia or nervous system overload. Breathing training is one of the most powerful tools we use to
● improve diaphragm-pelvic floor coordination,
● reduce pelvic tension,
● support blood pressure and heart rate regulation,
● lower inflammation and pain sensitivity.
We often teach parasympathetic breathing, vagus nerve stimulation, and gentle restorative movements.
3. Manual therapy when appropriate
Hands-on work may include
● myofascial release (external or internal),
● gentle visceral mobilization for organs such as the bladder or colon,
● scar tissue massage (especially after surgery or birth),
● lymphatic drainage if appropriate.
All manual work is consent-based, slow, and adapted to your sensitivity and energy level.
4. Movement & strengthening
We focus on safe, functional movement to support your lifestyle and reduce flare-ups:
● Core and hip stabilization for hypermobility (EDS)
● Graded activity planning for POTS or fatigue
● Gentle strengthening for deconditioned muscles
● Functional training for daily tasks: sitting, toileting, standing, walking
We’ll also teach strategies to reduce joint strain, support your posture, and manage symptoms during flare-ups.
5. Bladder & bowel retraining
Many chronic conditions impact bladder and bowel function. We help
● establish healthy toileting habits,
● relax the pelvic floor to help with constipation,
● provide suppression techniques for frequency/urgency,
● provide pushing strategies to eliminate straining.
6. Lifestyle, flare management & referrals
Chronic conditions often require multidisciplinary care. We help guide you through
● symptom pacing and energy conservation,
● navigating symptom flare-ups,
● collaborating with nutritionists, physicians and/or mental health providers,
● reintroduction to exercise and/or sexual activity.
